1 〔通りかかる〕 come near to…; approach; near.

●船が海峡に差しかかっている. A ship is entering the straits.

・パレードが市役所前に差し掛かると大きな花火が上がった. As soon as the parade neared the front of the 《米》 city [《英》 town] hall, huge fireworks were shot into the sky.

・道が峠に差しかかったころ足はいっそう痛み出した. About the time the trail neared the mountain pass, my legs began to ache even more.

2 〔ちょうどその時期になる〕 be on the verge [point] of…; verge on….

●雨季に差し掛かる be on the verge of the rainy season
